The Binder winery south of the Geschriebenstein has been in existence since 1956 and was initially run as a small business by Josef Binder Sr. – as was customary at the time, wine was produced for personal consumption. In 1986, Josef Binder Jr. took over the operation. Initially, the vineyard area was expanded to 37 a with the goal of marketing wine through the on-site Buschenschank and bottle sales. Since 2016, the business has been run by Andreas Binder in the third generation. The main varieties are Welschriesling and Blaufränkisch, growing in the vineyards Schiller and Wohlauf. The Welschriesling grows on weathered rock soils – this, along with the sun-protected location afforded by the Geschriebenstein, gives the Welschriesling its varietal, fruity, acid-driven aroma. The Blaufränkisch grapes in the Ried Wohlauf thrive on clay-rich soils. This is reflected in our Blaufränkisch wines, which exhibit a mild, velvety character, with the classic line being aged in large wooden casks, while the Blaufränkisch Reserve “Old Sepp” matures in small barrique barrels for between 12 and 20 months, depending on the vintage. Our small but fine winery places value on simple, traditional, passionate wine production, starting with the careful maintenance of the vineyards, hand-harvesting of the grapes, and strives to avoid the use of modern cellar technology as much as possible.

The distribution of the wines takes place through the on-site Buschenschank, a rustic establishment.
