Family winery on the Rosenberg.
Sandstone, limestone, red beds – we can show you hundreds of millions of years of earth history. And that is reflected in our wines. During a tour of our vineyards. Rarely do so many different soil types occur in such a small area as here in Birkweiler, Albersweiler, and Ranschbach.
With a 40% share of Riesling, 14% Pinot Noir, and 13% each of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, it becomes clear where the focus lies at Gies-Düppel: designated areas are consistently only given for the upper quality lines of these four grape varieties.
Other grape varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Viognier, Muscat, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
The density of our wines is not a coincidence. Several passes through the vine rows for thinning and selecting result in yields that may seem ridiculously low to some, but guarantee us high quality.
The cellar construction is also an important indication of modern processing within a traditional perspective: gentle work is possible on several levels.
For our white wines, we primarily use stainless steel barrels. A portion of the vineyard wines is also vinified in large oak barrels. In barriques, we mainly age red wines, preferring slightly larger barrels to prevent the wood's influence from becoming too dominant.
For the same reason of preserving natural fruit, we also take the Pinot Noir off the skins after no more than ten days of fermentation. However, we would like to explore new possibilities through experiments to see our path confirmed and expanded.
In the tasting room with a panoramic view, it is wonderful to taste. For example, wines that have a connection to the soil on which they grew. They are extremely different, even within the same grape variety. Just compare our Rieslings from slate, granite, claystone, and limestone – the differences will be on your palate.
The winery is a member of the "Forum Pfalz" and the "Südpfalz Connexion".
