The partially restored medieval Spangenberg spur castle towers high above the Elmstein Valley and offers an impressive panoramic view from the upper castle. It was first mentioned in a feudal letter from the Prince-Bishop of Speyer. After being destroyed in the Weißenburg Feud in 1470, it was rebuilt, unlike the neighbouring castles of Erfenstein and Breitenstein. From 1480 onwards, a magnificent castle complex was built, the dimensions of which can still be seen today. Within the walls, the historic Stutgarten, the old castle well and a former quarry bear witness to its former use. A special highlight is the rustic castle tavern at Spangenberg Castle, which invites hikers and day trippers to enjoy a pleasant stop and also offers an atmospheric setting for celebrations and medieval banquets. After further destruction during the Thirty Years' War, the Burg Spangenberg e.V. association has been responsible for maintaining the complex since 1971. The castle is located directly on the popular 3-castle circular trail (approx. 7 km).
