The bicycle is perhaps the best way to discover the region! You go at your own pace, stop where you want, and visit as many tourist attractions in Dobrogea as possible. You can pedal towards the seaside resorts or between them, cross the Casimcea Plateau on gravel and dusty roads, or venture on the trails in the Măcin Mountains. There are no marked bike routes, so we have gathered here some bike route ideas in Dobrogea to inspire you.
The 10 most beautiful cycle routes in Dobrogea
Which bike trails in Dobrogea would you like to try?
Little is known about Dobrogea as a cycling destination, and there are no routes for cyclists. But the attempts to explore the area on two wheels delight travelers thirsty for adventure.
In few places in Romania can you encounter roads stretching as far as the eye can see, flanked by fields of rapeseed, poppies, or wheat, arid landscapes through which green oases and wetlands with reeds break through, wind farms and villages with low houses, covered with thatch, and with blue frames on the windows.
The Măcin Mountains rise out of nowhere in the vast landscape, more like a hill than mountains, and you can hardly imagine that you can even reach here by bike.
Moreover, Dobrogea is not as flat as one would think. With few exceptions, any bike route you plan here involves either hilly terrain or considerable distances.
Bike to the Sea
The "Bike to the Sea" movement (starting from Bucharest) has set the tone for the possibilities of a different way to reach the seaside resorts, one much more sustainable, more memorable, with more surprises than just a simple car ride.
Once the adventure was tried, several possibilities to combine the secondary roads in Dobrogea for this purpose were discovered.
From Cernavodă, Medgidia, Ostrov or Tulcea, there are just as many roads that lead to the sea. Well, they have actually been there forever, but very few dared to try them.
A bike route to the sea offers you the ideal dose of effort, challenge, delight, adventure, new places and communities, and the reward at the end (the beach and a swim in the sea).
Mountain biking in Dobrogea as well
The Măcin Mountains are the only destination in Dobrogea where you can find mountain bike trails. One more reason to try them, knowing you’re in for a sure thing.
The mountain bike trails in the Măcin Mountains have a bit of everything: considerable elevation change, rugged terrain, sections for push bike followed by crazy descents, panoramas, and almost total exposure.
It’s no wonder that one of the most unique mountain bike races in Romania, Măcin XC, is held here – a chance to put your saddle skills and taste for adrenaline to the test.
Bike trails near Constanța
Constanța is not as much of a landmark as the resorts on the coast, but many bike trails in Dobrogea circle around the city.
A well-planned two-wheel tour in the region can target the Dobrogean wineries in an attempt to taste and compare the local wines. Different in acidity, color, and aroma from other Romanian wines, Dobrogean wines have a tradition of hundreds of years and continue to make history.
The wine route through Dobrogea is winding, with ups and downs on the sun-scorched Dobrogean hills, taking you through places steeped in history ...
Another possibility for bike exploration near Constanta can connect several ancient Greek and Roman fortresses. The most convenient is the route between Tomis and Callatis, meaning between Constanta and Mangalia. Do it in the off-season to enter through the resorts, and the ride will feel like a breeze (lack of crowding), with salty notes of course, due to the proximity to the sea.
Along the Danube, between Cernavoda and Hârșova, there is another option, less often explored and perhaps with fewer rewards due to poor infrastructure.
Cycling through the Delta
The bike trails that you can travel across the Danube Delta both lengthwise and crosswise are definitely underestimated. Maybe due to the lack of information, maybe because of the arid terrain that inspires uncertainty. Perhaps because of a preconceived idea that there are no roads in the Delta other than sandy ones.
And yet, the Danube Delta can indeed be crossed by bike, through the main localities within the wetland area, of course following dry roads, dirt paths, or with a bit of asphalt. Between Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe, for example, you will be surprised to discover a true regional highway, as all the supplies for the village at the end of the Delta come from the city.
