Accessible holidays in Žiar

Plačlivé, also called Plačlivý Roháč, is a significant peak in the main ridge of the Western Tatras. It is a distinctive pyramid that can be seen from afar. Together with Ostrý Roháč peak, they form an iconic panorama, thanks to which this part of the Western Tatras is also called Roháče. It attracts with good accessibility from Žiarské sedlo and an excellent view.

Mt Baranec (2184m) is a peak overlooking Liptovský Mikuláš. Along with Mt Kriváň, it is a dominant part of the town’s panorama and undoubtedly one of the most visited peaks of the Western Tatras and the region of Liptov. 

Such shady and steep slopes can be very dangerous, especially in December and January, when the sun’s rays do not reach here, so snow stabilization process is not possible and unstable layers of snow can form. 

The goal is a distinctive saddle between peaks Tri kopy and Plačlivô on the main ridge of the Western Tatras. The Saddle connects the closed Smutná dolina (Smutná valley) in the winter with the Žiarská dolina (Žiarská valley). It is one of the most classic tours in the Western Tatras. However, it leads in rugged open terrain, so it is not suitable for less experienced skiers or beginners (especially in the case of icy conditions).

The goal is the only mountain hut on the southern side of the Western Tatras, which is open every day, all year round. This route is popularly used by the very beginners, not that experienced skiers, whole families, or as a short hike in the mountains. It can also be completed with children, or as the first trip for people who are new to ski touring/ski mountaineering. Recently, it has become widely popular to visit the hut in the evening/dark, in the light of the headlight only.
