Wegbeschreibung
- Start with the Dixence cable car, which leaves every 10 minutes and saves a steep climb to the top of the dam. The cable car starts at 9:05 mid-summer.
- For an earlier start you’ll need to walk up though. Follow the wide track from the hotel up the right-hand side of the dam. Once you reach the top, you’ll be walking along the Dixence reservoir, an amazing hydro project capturing water from 35 glaciers across the Valais, including the Matterhorn, all pumped underground to this reservoir where the large drop is used to generate electricity.
- Follow the trail along the water. You’ll pass through a couple tunnels, the first of which and the longest, has a switch to turn lights on in the tunnel for a few minutes. It’s a peaceful and pretty walk. You’ll pass the trail coming down from la Barme and will be joined by hikers from Prafleuri hut. Follow this wide trail all the way to the end, Pas du Chat, where a small, steep trail leads up the hillside to the right.
- Head up. In about 45 minutes, the trail splits with the left turn heading to Riedmatten and Chevres passes and the right fork to Dix hut (a spectacular detour, but one that adds 1000 ft and a short glacier crossing to your day). The direct trail is well signposted, and you should follow this as it descends slightly into the valley, crosses the river coming from the Dix glacier on a bridge, and up heads into rocky glacial landscape on the other side of the valley.
- This section is rugged, and you’ll need to take your time as you clamber up. You’ll reach a fork with signs painted on a rock pointing left to Riedmatten or right to Chevres.
- The Pas de Chèvres is popular and exciting, a pair of nearly vertical ladders bolted to the rock face for a climb of about 80-100 ft, but they have been closed in recent years.
- You can stay left at the trail fork and go up to the slightly higher Col de Riedmatten, a very steep, gritty ascent up a narrow gully to a tiny notch in the ridge. If the trail is wet or icy at all, Riedmatten pass can be tricky.
- From the pass you’ll have amazing views to the east, with the Pigne de Arolla and Mont Collon up close, the needle-like Aiguille de la Tsa on the far ridge, and the top of the distant Matterhorn behind it. The trail drops clearly down on a long but steady descent, met soon by the trail from the other pass.
- The trail down from here is easy and scenic. You’ll pass a pair of dilapidated slate-roofed barns at 2399 m, and shortly after a very nice detour leads down to the right to Tsijiore Nouve, where there is a small buvette serving drinks. From here, a delightful wooded trail leading in to Arolla, a tiny village with just a few hotels and shops.
