Sehr schöne und aussichtsreiche Tour auf meist guten Wegen oder abgelegen Strässchen. Wir sind die Runde mit E-Moutainbikes in die andere Richtung gefahren, die teils steilen, längeren Anstiege waren damit kein Problem

Winter Sports Gear Checklist: What Beginners Need for Their First Trip
    Foto: Winter Sports,

Winter sports trip first time is the time when you realize what really works in terms of gear and what is just a waste of money. A beginner, for example, is very likely to buy a lot of items they don't need and neglect those that could have made their trip significantly better. One of the reasons for this is that the advice you get from online is either from people with $3,000 setups or from people who don't ski at all.

However, the fact is that even if you're planning a first trip, you don't have to buy everything. It is advisable that most of the big-ticket items should be rented for the beginner while a narrow range of smaller items should be owned right away because rental versions of these items are either poor, not available, or soiled to the extent that you don't want to share them. Below is a simple and honest gear guide for a person going to the mountains for their first time, concentrating on what can help one avoid an utterly miserable first day rather than what will make the person look best in photos.

What to Rent and What to Buy

The biggest mistake that beginners make is to buy skis, snowboard or boots before the first trip. The reasoning sounds logical - why pay rental fees when you could own it? - but it quickly falls apart when you actually start skiing. You don't know what kind of terrain you'll be enjoying, what level you'll progress to, or even whether you'll love the sport enough to justify the gear.

In most Alpine resorts ski boots, and poles rental packages run about 40 to 60 Swiss francs a day, with multi-day discounts that for per-day costs to be lower. A weekend's rental is only a small part of the cost of entry-level gear, and rental shops can help you with boot fitting, sizing, and the moment where you want to try different skis after the first half-day. Snowboarders will have the same experience - get the board and bindings, absolutely get the boots as a first-trip rental.

    The Clothing That Actually Matters

The clothing layering system is often poorly explained to beginners. To put it briefly, you need three layers that complement each other, rather than a bunch of warm random clothes piled over one another.

Base layers are those which are in direct contact with your skin and they work to regulate your moisture. The main part of this foundation is a merino wool or synthetic base layer top and bottom, and the biggest mistake made by beginners who buy cheap here. Cotton under ski gear is absolutely terrible - it absorbs sweat, leaves you cold, and stays cold the whole day. A good base layer set costs from $80 to $150 and it is totally worth it. For a multi-day trip, carry two sets so that one can be drying while you wear the other.

Mid layers are the ones that give you the required warmth. For most winter conditions, a fleece or a light synthetic or down jacket with about 100 grams of insulation is the suitable level of warmth that you should aim to have. As your body temperature will rise or fall with the level of activity and the weather, you'll probably be putting this layer on and taking it off quite frequently, so it has to be compact enough to carry in a backpack. Stay away from things labeled "expedition weight" for a first trip.

Small Items That Save the Trip

"The equipment that is thoughtlessly thrown in at the last minute can often make the difference between a wonderful first trip that you recall with a smile and abruptly ending your trip. These are the things you should not simply throw in at the last minute but rather consider carefully.

Ski socks warrant serious consideration. One pair of high-quality merino ski socks will outlast and outperform three pairs of cotton tube socks and cost about $25. Two pairs should be enough for a weekend, three for a longer trip. Thin is better than thick -ski boots are designed for mid-weight socks, and thick socks actually decrease warmth by cutting off circulation and causing fit issues. This is quite deeply counterintuitive but still true. Swiss online outdoor retailers like pandaloo.ch are a sensible place to order these small essentials ahead of the trip, since picking them up at resort shops usually means paying a noticeable markup for the same brands.

Gloves or mittens must be entirely waterproof and warm. A 20-franc pair from a general sporting goods store will get soaked and you'll be miserable. In the $60 to $100 range a pair of actual ski gloves or mittens can last you several years and keep your hands working in any situations you can ski as a beginner. Mittens are warmer than gloves; gloves provide more dexterity. Either one is fine."

    What Not to Buy Yet

One of the strategies to packing well for a first vacation is to be strong enough to refuse the sales pitch on the gear that is not actually necessary at the moment. Beginner lessons, attic equipment, and clothing layers up from will be the primary means of your first several days. The rest of the things should be saved.

Don't be in a hurry to buy skis, boots, or snowboard before your first trip. The equipment has to be adjusted to your real skill level and your personal preferences, and since you haven't skied yet, you don't know either of those. A pair of boots properly fitted is a major upgrade to your performance, but boot fitting is the kind of work that requires the person to have some experience and to know what he wants.

Do not go for the top-of-the-line base layers, mid layers, and shells. Entry-level gear from reputable brands will be doing so to and fro with premium gear for beginner conditions besides the premium ones are made for conditions that beginners won't experience for several seasons. A $300 shell jacket is absolutely better than a $150 one in extreme conditions, but a beginner is not going to ski those conditions.

The Kit That Gets It Done

Successfully completing a first winter sports holiday with a well-packed bag is mainly about renting those big and expensive items, getting a particular set of clothes and smaller accessories, and controlling the temptation of buying too much gear that you might not even use. If done like this, a first trip may cost between 600 and 900 Swiss francs for clothes and accessories, excluding the rental and lesson costs, which is significantly less than the beginner's checklists that pushes them towards $2,500 equipments before even knowing if they will enjoy the sport.

Those beginners who after trying winter sports find themselves drawn to it usually discover it only after their second or third trip, and then they start upgrading a particular piece based on experience rather than purchasing everything at once. First time visit is basically discovering what is important, and the gear list that assists that - warm, dry, and comfortable, without being over the top - is the one that makes it most probable that you'll be coming back for another one.

( Normalradfahrer, kein E Bike...)
