The Franciscan Monastery Bač in Bač is one of the most important medieval religious complexes in Vojvodina, combining Romanesque, Gothic, and later Baroque elements and preserving a continuous monastic presence for centuries.
The monastery complex in Bač has roots reaching back to 1169, when a monastery and church were built on the site of an earlier cathedral by the Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre, a religious order connected to the Crusader movement to Jerusalem. Their members were known as “cruciferi” because they wore a distinctive cross—one large red cross with four smaller ones on a white cloak.

Architecturally, the church represents a rare example of Romanesque architecture in the region, featuring a five-sided apse, a structure combining stone and brick, and decorative elements such as pillars carved with animal heads and roof ornaments resembling gargoyles. The interior resembles an early Christian basilica, with plain walls and strong structural forms similar to Romanesque buildings in the Rhine Valley of Germany.

History treated the monastery roughly, as it did most of the Danube frontier. In 1241, the complex was devastated during the Mongol invasion of Europe. Later in the 13th century, the church and monastery were rebuilt and fortified, gaining Gothic architectural features, including vaulted ceilings and carved stone arches. Archaeological excavations show that the monastery once functioned partly as a fortified complex with moats, walls, and towers.

In 1300, the Hungarian king Andrew III of Hungary transferred the monastery to the Franciscan Order, who have remained associated with the site ever since.

After the catastrophic Battle of Mohács, the region fell under Ottoman rule. During this period, the monastery church was converted into a mosque. The Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi described the building in 1665, noting that the former bell tower had become a minaret.

When Ottoman control ended in 1688, the Franciscans returned and gradually rebuilt the monastery. Major reconstruction took place during the 18th century, especially between 1734 and 1768, creating the present monastic complex with cloisters and additional wings surrounding the medieval church.

Today the monastery houses archives and a library containing books from the 15th to the 20th centuries, along with historic liturgical objects, textiles, and artifacts that illustrate the long continuity of religious life at the site. The church also contains one of the oldest organs in Vojvodina, originally installed in 1716 and replaced in 1827 with a larger organ built by Franciscan craftsmen from Baja.
