The elongated, late Baroque ‘Alte Braue’ building was erected in the middle of the 18th century and originally had only six window axes.
When the façade was renovated in 1823, the building was extended by three axes, and a further three were added after the demolition of a farmhouse around 1928. Today's twelve-axis building is characterised by its arched entrances and windows.
The name and the pub sign are reminiscent of the ‘Brodbeck Brewery’, which operated here from 1807 to 1890. Behind the house were the brewery buildings and the beer and ice cellars built into the hillside.
The pub entrance with its Empire-style oak door adds to the charm of the building. A stone plaque on the façade commemorates the Nobel Prize winner for literature Carl Spitteler, who was born here in 1843. Spitteler described the inn as the ‘birthplace of his ego’. The inn also played a role as a refuge for rebels after the failed Baden Revolution of 1848, which Spitteler wrote about in his memoirs.
The guest room features original murals by the Liestal painter Otto Plattner, which refer to Spitteler's famous poem ‘The Yodelling Shield Guards’.
