The tower is also associated with a well-known local legend regarding the placement of its bell. According to tradition, a bell was repeatedly tested in different locations to determine where its sound would carry most effectively across the surrounding landscape. After several unsuccessful attempts, Brdo Hill was chosen because it allowed the sound to travel clearly across the town and nearby Rhodope Mountains. The original bell was later damaged during the Balkan Wars, replaced twice in the 20th century, and the current bell dates from the early 2000s after a previous one was stolen. Today, the tower remains an important historical and cultural symbol of Rakitovo’s Ottoman-era heritage and later municipal identity.
