Sovana

Small center , has always been known as one of the most beautiful towns in Maremma, still retains its medieval appearance. Walking along the main street that goes from the Rocca to The Cathedral, you have the feeling that time has stood still waiting for our arrival. Built on a tufa plateau the first traces of occupation dating back to the Bronze Age. The real development of the town was more after the Roman conquest. Of Etruscan people we know almost nothing but numerous Etruscan and Roman finds have been unearthed from the necropolis extending over a large area around Sovana and offer monumental tombs in the temple, a newspaper stand and a cube-tombs.  It was under Byzantine rule until the end of the sixth century that later came to the Lombards. The village was built in the Middle Ages when the county of Sovana belonged to the family of the Aldobrandeschis. Following the marriage of Anastasia Aldobrandeschis and Romano Orsini. In 1440 it was conquered by Siena and recovery from the Orsini in 1552 after a few years it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
