Crossing the Col de Balme between Switzerland and France is always a scenic moment. On the Swiss side, a quiet pastoral valley unfolds below you. On the French side, a spectacular view of Mont Blanc and the surrounding mountains.
There is an old inn at the pass, convenient for a drink or a bite to eat. In previous years they did not have the friendliest reputation, but the new owners have put a lot of care and work into it, and made this a super-inviting restaurant with a very welcoming vibe. They have both indoor seating and a large outdoor terrace.
From the Swiss side, you have to hike to get here, but on the French side, a chairlift comes almost all the way to the pass and offers a convenient alternative. This is usually the last pass you cross on our TMB tours, or the first pass on our Haute Route tours, and is worth a stop anytime.
