The trailhead starts at the Los Quejigales recreation area - part of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. It is an "out and back" route and although the summit is 1919m, the trailhead is already at 1300m, so the walk is very 'doable' and very rewarding in term of scenery and interest.
Highlights are:
- lovely initial leg through woodland.
- archeological interest via an old ice storage pit.
- geological interest as you walk through through Jurassic times.
- caves and a shrine to Santa Maria de la Victoria.
- a great picnic spot at the caves overlooking the summit slopes ahead of you.
- and those stunning panoramas from the top.
Walk length: 14,4 km round trip (7,2 km to the summit)
Total height gain: 873 m
Maximum height reached: 1919 m
Difficulty: Hard, mainly due to the overall length and final steep slopes.
Time required: It's about 2 to 2,5 hours to the top, excluding any stops, and about 2 hours back down. Suggest allowing 5-6 hours overall, including stops, to fully enjoy the views and beautiful surroundings.
