Cheile Nerei - Beușnița National Park stretches on both sides of the Nera River. The waters have carved into the Jurassic limestones the longest gorges on the Romanian territory - the Nera Gorges (approx 23km long). They are now the gist of the touristic attractions here. The park partially overlaps with the Anina Mountains.
The waters and streams that spring from the mountains have carved a spectacular and very picturesque relief. Along the park, there are many caves, waterfalls, lakes, or specific meadows.
Many of them, as well as the main tourist attractions Beușnița Waterfalls or Ochiul Bei can be admired along marked tourist routes. Hikers and bikers are welcome to try these paths and enjoy the natural beauty of the landscape.
Bigăr Waterfall is located on the opposite edge of the park, close to the national road; access to the waterfall is easy. On the same side, if you pass through Bozovizi, don't miss the Rudaria water mills.
Protecting the area's biodiversity is essential. Thousands of hectares of beech forests in the national park are part of the UNESCO Natural Heritage. The caves are home to important fish populations, while 9 out of 10 species of woodpeckers in the country have found a good nesting place here. A peculiarity of the area is the sub-Mediterranean climate, which makes possible the presence of species such as the Euscorpius or the horned viper.
Access on the routes is possible especially from the western part of the area - Socolari, Potoc, Sasca Română, Cărbunari - or from Anina. Also in the mentioned villages, you should find most accommodation options.
