About 80 German soldiers camped in these outposts. They chose this secluded location, the so-called Sochora, because from there they could control the entire marine area of the three seas (Aegean, Ionian and Cretan).
The dirt road and the buildings were constructed with forced labor. There were ten pillboxes, the headquarters, cook houses, warehouses for military equipment etc.
When the Germans were defeated and expelled, they blew up the buildings and Kythera became the first part of Greece to be liberated as documented by the well-known landing of Allied forces at Kapsali on September 15, 1944. Years later, a fire that broke out in the area, sparked the remaining active war material, resulting in many big explosions.
