Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea), known as “kedros” to the locals, mixed with phrygana vegetation.
In some parts of southern and western Kythera juniper is the dominant forest species. Today, the largest juniper forests are found on the wild coastal slopes of Mylopotamos-Limnionas region, although their expanses have decreased dramatically due to the successive fires of 2000, 2007 and 2017.
The juniper wood is heavy, fragrant and highly resistant to rot and insects. Thus, they were used for the manufacture of furniture, tools and as rafters on roofs.
