An Albanian Traverse
It was truly amazing to cross this whole country. It starts with amazing mountains in the north. This is also the main touristic area. The barren mountains, with the shepherds always around, will never leave your side. However, the more south you go, the lower the mountains get. But also your are welcomed by new things; olive trees, lakes, turtles and in the end the sea! This whole experience is coloured in by the amazing people we met on the way, who invited us for coffee, gave us fruit, welcomed us in their homes and offered us a home to stay. We feel grateful for everything.
NOTES
- We hiked it in September/October 2021. We had 34 hiking days and several rest days. Our backpacks are between 15-18 kg.
- We added/deleted/changed relevant POI and paths directly in OpenStreetMap, so that all outdoor apps can use it rather than being monopolised by one app/company
- We plotted the route afterwards over our GPX, so this is not our original GPX. There might be minor deviations in real life.
- We only used online sources for the route. There might be good paper maps aswell.
ALTERNATIVES
Clearly, there are endless alternatives possible. Additionally, only a selection of the paths you will find on maps, so sometimes taking a chance might be worth it. Here are a few detours you might want to consider:
- Via the Valbone valley and Maja Gravnit (2509) to Curraj
- If you do not want to take the boat, see further inspiration below
- You could enter Lurës NP via Maja e Kunora (2119). See Wikiloc for routes.
- If you would like to visit Tirana, it is probably easiest to take a bus from Elbasan. Alternatively, you could change the route in such a way that you pass the Dajti cable car which brings you down.
- Between Burrel and Guri i Bardhë we had a hard time finding our way. In the end we just went down. Would suggest to search something else there
- If you continue on the road after Gjinar you could visit Kanioni i Holtes (canyon) and Shpella e Kabashit (cave)
- In Tomorrit NP you pass by closely the Tek Abaz Aliu mosque
- In Kelcyre there are 2 alternatives; right after the village there is a trail to Kalaja e Këlcyrës (ruine). Alternatively, you could follow the river eastwards and after a bit cross it from where there is a trail via Mbrezhan to the restaurants where you will be on track again.
- There is a trail between Doshnice and Hoshteve (probably marked, see wikiloc).
- Gjirokaster might be worth visiting.

PRACTICALITIES
- Water: we never had more than 20 km without a watersource. However we had a filter with us, so if you don’t, a bit more preparation is needed but should be doable.
- Food: we got resupplies in: Vermosh (very small container), Theth (mini market), Curraj i Poshtem (very small), Koman (mini market), Pukë, Reps (petrol station with small shop outside), Burrel, Klos, Gari i Bardhë (very small), Elbasan, Gramsh, Corovode, Kelcyre (mini market), Dervican (mini market), Saranda
- Sleeping: we mainly slept in our tent. Also quite some accommodations along the way.
- Road - most of them are gravel/stone/sand roads/tracks. In the Accursed Mountains the trails are marked. Asphalt: till Fierze (17), before and after Pukë (17), to Reps (15), around Burrel (7), before Gjinar (around 10), around Gramsch (10), Kelcyre (8), before Blue Eye (4), to Sarandë (15). That makes a total of 103 km on asphalt. The boat section (Komani Lake) is 33 km.
