An easy walking, part circular route along the trackbed of the former mineral railway, linking the mines around Bedar with the port at Garrucha. The return part of the loop has some ascent, giving good long views. The entire route is good underfoot.
Tried amending the trip to Turre - found some bee hives & a dead end before returning to the standard route.
From Turre I headed towards Garrucha avoiding the main road. Whilst the route from Turre to Garrucha on a bike might have been fun, this was NOT a good walk.
I had planned to walk along or besides the river basin from Turre but there were very steep concrete sides to join the basin, with few easy access points. I saw an entry point but in the (fairly ugly!) river basin there were some potentially homeless guys & debris.
I was a woman walking alone & didn’t want to get trapped in the basin, so chose to retrace my steps back to the road instead.
It was a minor road & traffic was considerate so walking along the road for a mile was not an issue (but wasn’t very scenic either - with various litter etc).
Shortly afterwards, I went back onto public dirt track. The walk was looking up….
Then I came across three dogs who were running free. They decided that I was close to their territory. The dogs proceeded to bark loudly & run up to me. One in particular was very underfed, without a collar & looked like a stray.
I took an unplanned right turn & proceeded to walk fast, shouting & waive my walking poles at the dogs - to encourage them to keep their distance. After well over half a mile of speed walking, they eventually stopped following me.
This ruined an already poor walk.
It was easy to drop into Garrucha, and a pleasant enough walk along the coast (albeit a bit less pretty as it was off season, so everything closed & the main road along the coast is currently being dug up!).
Had I been cycling - so planning to cycle along the minor road instead of the river basin I would not have seen the men, & I would have been able to get away from the dogs quicker…. I might have enjoyed this a lot more!
