Nella solitudine della foresta della Svezia occidentaleIl parco nazionale, fondato nel 1996, protegge un paesaggio forestale originale, attraversato da numerosi laghi. Il parco si trova circa 30 km a nord-ovest di Ed, il centro principale della ricca zona lacustre del Dalsland, e confina a ovest con il confine norvegese.
Da Bengtsfors alle HöljerudforsarnaIl canale Dalsland si estende per 250 chilometri dal lago Vänern verso nord fino al confine norvegese. Solo 21 chilometri del percorso sono stati costruiti artificialmente, il resto attraversa laghi. 17 stazioni di chiuse con un totale di 31 chiuse superano i 66 metri di dislivello dall'inizio fino alla foce nel Vänern.
