In Argeș, all roads lead to the mountains
The mountains are the main tourist attraction in Argeș. ”Seeing the mountains" in Argeș means a road trip on the Transfăgărășan or the Rucăr-Bran Corridor and admiring the mountains from the car, but also truly hiking up the mountain routes. Fortunately, the possibilities to enjoy hard hikes or just easy walks and dreamy landscapes in Argeș are innumerable.
The less active tourist can take refuge in the picturesque mountain villages on the Rucăr-Bran Corridor. The old shepherds' settlement Rucăr - now a hotspot for occasional tourism, promises tourists authentic experiences in any season. Advancing into the mountains, the wild Dâmbovița Gorges and Dâmbovicioarei Gorges, with their vertical walls pushing to the edge of the road, might pump up your adrenaline. Lots of marked or unmarked trails at the foot of the Piatra Craiului or Leaota Mountains open up for both the brave hikers and ambitious mountain bikers toward wooded valleys, past sheepfolds still in use, and upwards, to the real mountain trails.

The forest roads leading to the ridge of the Iezer-Păpușa Mountains are good for both mountain biking and off-road adventures. Travelers who admire the mountains from their cars and true mountaineers coexist for a while, but their paths separate at some point.
The main mountain challenge in Argeș County remains the Făgăraș Mountains, accessible from several points. The most sought-after option remains the climb through Valea Rea, which has become increasingly popular even among amateurs.
Argeș County is an excellent destination for history lovers. Traces of the Romanian trenches during the First World War are visible above the villages at the foot of Piatra Craiului Mountains. Nearby Câmpulung is the Mausoleum from Mateiaș, dedicated to the Romanian soldiers who died in 1916, in the Nămăiești area. Last but not least, near Pitesti is the Pitesti Prison Memorial, a mandatory stop to understand the repressions of the communist regime.
The Ștefănești-Argeș Vineyard near Pitești still produces quality grapes, but wine tourism is not developed in the county. However, the winemaking tradition is represented by a very beautiful wine museum (Golești), which can be a starting point in a scenic route of the wineries in Southern Romania.

A hotspot for adrenaline enthusiasts is the Vidraru Dam. From here starts the only fully equipped canyon route in Romania - Valea lui Stan. After climbing the stairs in the canyon, lay back and relax on Lake Vidraru, in a kayak. Also, at Vidraru Dam you'll find the largest bungee jumping installation in Romania (also the first one).
