This track starts from the small village of Tirna in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya and ends at Rainbow Falls. The track begins at the parking area built in Nongriat village. Here, you will find some small shops and local guides. At the start of the track, there are 3500 steps to descend! After descending about 1 km on the steps, you come upon a small path and a stream with a swinging bridge. After crossing the bridge, 400 meters ahead is another swing bridge stronger than the first. Crossing this bridge marks the beginning of Nongriat village boundary, though it is still the forest with betel nut trees. After the forest ends, there is a living root bridge, but this is not the famous double-decker living root bridge. Crossing this bridge, you can see houses, fields, and people of the village. The village is very clean and beautiful. It has some nice homestays which are quite popular among hikers.
Right opposite the village rest house is a double-decker living root bridge. Many tourists can be seen having fun in the river here. From near the guest house, going far on the trail leads to Rainbow Falls. After about half an hour’s walk, there is another swing bridge and immediately after that, another living root bridge. The trail disappears here, so keep the GPX file loaded in your navigation device or smartphone. After walking about 1 km more, you reach Rainbow Falls.
This track is very enjoyable and beautiful. The entire trail features swinging bridges, living root bridges, betel nut forests, jackfruit forests, cold streams, steps, birds, and butterflies. Filled with greenery, this track is one of the most wonderful in Northeast India.
