Stage 1: Bolzano - Andriano
This first stage of the trail is covered by bus, train or taxi. The actual trail then begins in the village of Andrian.
Stage 2: Andrian - Perdonig
This stage takes around 2.5 hours and leads to the hamlet of Perdonig. Accommodation should be booked in advance in any case; should it be fully booked, this and the next stage will be completed in one go. We take the road towards Eppan until we reach a fork. There we take path no. 2 until we reach the 23 m high Kreidenturm. We reach a forest road (trail no. 9) and walk uphill to the Hocheppan ruins. Continue uphill to a fork. We turn left and reach the south side of the Steinberg. We go downhill again and reach the road Eppan - Gaid. On this we pass a chapel and then climb up to Perdonig.
Stage 3: Perdonig - Penegal
This stage takes around 5 hours and is particularly strenuous because of its length and large differences in altitude. We cross the Mendel ridge and enjoy wonderful views. This stage should only be done in dry weather. We walk uphill from Gasthof Wieser on an asphalt road until we reach a fork. On trail no. 9 (Eppaner Höhenweg) we reach the Unterstein farm. Via several hairpin bends and forks, we reach a prominent fork where trail no. 536 leaves. On this path we reach a gully and later a hollow. We pass a spring and reach the Große Scharte. From there we take the cross trail no. 500 to a saddle. Soon we reach the ruined Baita del Prinz hut. We continue on trail no. 500 to the Furglauer Scharte. We get up to a saddle and then on level ground to the Serafino Hotel on the Penegal.
Stage 4: Penegal - Mendel Pass
The short descent down to the Mendel Pass takes just under an hour. On trail no. 500, it is initially steep and then switchbacks to state road no. 42 at the Mendel Pass.
Stage 5: Mendel Pass - Überetscher Hütte
This stage takes around 2.5 hours. There are several places to stop along the way. Again, we take trail no. 500 until we reach a fork. There we keep to the left and go up to the Enzian Hut. We continue on trail no. 500 until we reach the Halbweghütte. From there we soon get up to a shoulder with a great view. From there we descend again to the Roènalm. Here the trail divides and we follow no. 560 first uphill and later downhill again to the Überetscher Hut.
Stage 6: Überetscher Hut - Rif. Predaia
This stage takes around 4 hours and is particularly scenic. We cross the M. Roen and part of the southern Mendel ridge on the way. On the Roen via ferrata, surefootedness and a head for heights are required. We first take trail no. 523 steeply uphill and soon reach a section where some climbing is required. There is a continuous wire rope here. We get uphill to a mountain edge and further into a steep gully. Soon we go through a wall, which, however, allows a good grip (difficulty level I, wire rope). We reach the ridge of M. Roen via another secured rocky climb. We then continue up to the plateau of the summit. We hike downhill on trail no. 501 until we reach a saddle. Soon we reach the Chamois Trail, the Sentiero dei Camosci, via a high-level hike with wonderful views. We continue on trail no. 501. In constant ups and downs we finally reach a saddle in front of the Schönleiten ridge. There we take cart path no. 6 and soon reach the Corederjoch and soon after the highest point of the Schönleitenkamm. We pass the Santa Barbara wayside shrine and reach the Gaunerjoch. Continue on trail B until you finally reach Mga. Rodezza and soon after reach the meadows of Predaia. From there it is not far to Rif. Predaia.
Stage 7: Rif. Predaia - Smarano
This stage only takes 1.5 hours, but is poorly signposted in parts. Some sense of direction is needed. We go downhill on the mountain road no. 503 as far as Rif. Sores. Then we take the asphalt road uphill to a hill and soon downhill again. Soon after, we reach the village area of Sfruz. The asphalt road takes us down to Smarano.
Stage 8: Smarano - Cles
This stage is covered by bus. It is a good idea to take a break and visit the hermitage of San Romedio
Stage 9: Cles - Rif. Peller
This stage takes around 4.5 hours. We cross the Brenta Group on the way. This is one of the scenic highlights of the route. From the centre of Cles we walk to Piazza Granda. Continue along path no. 313 (Via Tiberio Claudio) to Via delle Scuole, first on this and a little later on a cross-country road, we reach Bersaglio and continue uphill to the Ristorante Bersaglio. From there, take mountain trail no. 313b to Campo di Nanno. Soon we reach Passo Le Fraine and a little later the alpine meadows of Mga. Roi. We keep to the right and at the next fork left and reach Rif. Peller.
Stage 10: Rif. Peller - Rif. Graffer
This particularly long stage of the trail takes around 8.5 hours. We pass through the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park on this section of the trail, which is very pristine. There are a few climbing passages of difficulty level I to overcome. We take path no. 351 until we reach the eastern ridge of M. Peller. Soon after, we reach Mga. Tassullo at an altitude of 2090m. Here you can also find the Biv. Pinamonti. Continue on trail n. 306 and 336 until below the Passo della Forcola. Then we reach the Passo della Nana. Directly behind it we reach a fork. Here we keep to the left and take the Sentiero delle Palete (path no. 306). A little later we reach the large boulders at Passo dell'Uomo. Via paths and ribbons we finally descend into the upper Val Madris. The trail continues downhill to the meadow terrace of Campo di Tuenno. Via path no. 306 we go up and down and over some climbing sections of difficulty level I until we reach the Bocchetta delle Palete. Soon after, we go through a steep wall secured by a wire rope and iron clamps. We reach a junction with trail no. 334. We continue on trail no. 306 until we reach the Passo del Groste. From the top station of the Groste cable car, we take trail no. 301 to Rif. Giorgio Graffer.
Stage 11: Rif. Graffer - Rif. Tuckett
This stage takes about 1.5 hours and is quite easy to walk. We take trail no. 331 until crossing with trail no. 316, which we follow down to an area where there are huge boulders. Soon we cross the vertical black and yellow north face of the Torrione di Vallesinella. Further on we reach the western side of the Vallesinella massif. Uphill we reach the Tuckett Hut.
Stage 12: Rif. Tuckett - Rif. Brentei
This stage takes just under two hours. We go down from the hut to a fork. We take trail no. 328 and reach the Sella del Fridolin via a constant up and down. Soon we reach the cross path n. 318 and follow it until we finally reach a ribbon where we go across a wall. We continue through a short tunnel until we reach a place from where we can see the Brentei hut for the first time. From there we descend to Rif. Brentei.
Stage 13: Rif. Brentei - Rif. Pedrotti
This stage takes just under two hours. In early summer, when there are still remnants of snow, it is advisable to have crampons and an ice axe with you. We take trail no. 318 up to the Brentei Chapel and continue uphill to the rock column of the Campanile Basso. Then we continue on wire ropes up to the Bocca di Brenta. We go downhill again, cross the east face of C. Brenta Bassa and reach Rif. Pedrotti.
Stage 14: Rif. Pedrotti - Rif. Agostini
On this stage we are on the move for about 2.5 hours. We first take trail n. 304 and 320 until we reach the Pozza Tramontana sinkhole. At a fork, follow path no. 320 to the other side of the basin. In constant ups and downs, we finally reach the Forcolotta di Noghera. From there two steep gullies lead down, we go down the right one and out of it on the right. Soon after, the trail climbs up to Rif. Silvio Agostini
Stage 15: Rif. Agostini - Rif. XII Apostoli
This stage takes just under 3 hours and is particularly scenic. The Via ferrata Ettore Castiglioni is on the route and requires surefootedness and a head for heights. We go uphill on trail no. 358 until we reach a fork. Turn left and take path no. 321 until you reach a gorge. This is where the Via ferrata Ettore Castiglioni begins. Enter the perpendicular wall and climb up an iron ladder to a band. We turn left and soon take more ladders up to an extremely narrow ledge. The climb continues, partly upwards on wire ropes, to the Bocchetta dei Due Denti. We pass a snowfield. Finally, the route continues in constant ups and downs to Rif. XII Apostoli.
Stage 16: Rif. XII Apostoli - Passo Daone
This stage, which takes around 6.5 hours, leads in part through extremely lonely terrain. The stage is demanding, with numerous metres of altitude lost. We start on trail no. 307 and descend into the south face of the C. Nardis and further down into a steep gorge. It continues downhill until we reach the meadow floor of the Pian di Nardis. We now go up and down until we reach a meadow saddle. We turn left onto path no. 354 and reach the meadows at Passo del Gotro. Soon afterwards we reach Mga. Movlina. We reach a clearing and leave the road. Continue along path no. 350 until you reach the meadow around Mga. Serli. We soon reach the Baita Pozza hut and take a beautiful high-level walk to Passo Malghette. Near the pass we take path no. 10 and descend. It goes up and down several times until we finally reach the houses of Mga. Pramarciu. We descend on a forest road and then continue on trail no. 9 down to an asphalt road. In a few minutes we reach Passo Daone on the left.
Stage 17: Passo Daone - Preore
This stage, which takes just under 3 hours, is a relatively easy descent down into Val Giudicarie Superiore. We take the asphalt road towards Montagne and soon turn onto trail no. 1 and no. 300. Soon we reach the Peza Porcel saddle and the Part forest meadow. A little later we reach the huts of Mga. Amolo. We follow path no. 300 until we reach Pra da Plaza. Continue along the forest road and then turn right onto path no. 17. At the next junction, keep left and go down to the asphalt road Larzana - Preore. We continue along this road until we reach Stelle. From there we go downhill on a path and back to the road that brings us to Preore.
Stage 18: Preore - Zuclo
This stage takes just under an hour and leads along a road to the village of Zuclo. Alternatively, the route can be covered by bus. We leave the village of Preore and then take state road 237, on which we turn right towards Tione and later, at a fork, turn left until we reach Zuclo.
Stage 19: Zuclo - Malghe Stabio
The stage is covered in around 3 hours. We take the asphalt road from Zuclo up to a hill. We go up and down a few times before climbing uphill until the road turns into the west side of C. Sera. We now continue along a cart track, first climbing steeply and then descending into a ditch. We go uphill again and soon reach the meadow shoulder of Stabio. There we keep to the left and go slightly uphill to Mga. Stabio di Bleggio Superiore.
Stage 20: Malghe Stabio - Rif. Pernici
This stage is the longest and most difficult of the entire tour. Surefootedness, a head for heights, stamina and a sense of direction are absolutely essential. It goes through quite lonely mountainous country, which is marked throughout, but not always sufficiently. There is no water along the way for the entire stage. We start the route on forest road no. 463 and first get up into a forest. We continue uphill until we reach the upper Val Ridever. There we keep to the left at a fork and soon reach Mga. Solvia. Continue uphill to the upper valley and then to the highest point at 2005m. We now hike over the southern ridge of the C. Pala and soon after slightly downhill again towards the Val Larga. Then we go uphill again until we reach the Bocca di Val Larga. Soon after, we reach the crest below M. Rodola. Now we descend southwards into a saddle. Soon afterwards we reach the summit of M. Gaverdina. This is where the demanding part of the stage ends. We now follow trail no. 455 uphill into a saddle. It goes up and down a few times before we reach the southern saddle of Dossa della Torta. Soon we continue on the old war path n. 420 down to the Bocchetta di Slavazi. We start climbing again and soon reach the summit of Tofino at an altitude of 2151m. Soon we reach the "Piramide" and thus the main summit of Corno di Pichea. We hike through the Bocca di Trat and then take cart path no. 413 into the left side of the Dosso di Seaoi and up to Rif. Nino Pernici.
Stage 21: Rif. Pernici - Pieve di Ledro
This stage takes just under three hours and is quite easy to walk. We take the old war path no. 413 and soon reach a hollow with dilapidated war buildings. At a fork, we take trail no. 454 and hike up to the Bocca di Saval. Soon the path goes downhill again and we reach Mga. Saval. Continue down and through the southeast flank of M. Tomeabru, past rock towers and further down to Forc. Cocca. Soon after, we reach the lower Val dei Molini. We turn left and reach Pieve di Ledro on a cart track.
Stage 22: Pieve di Ledro - Rif. Garibaldi
This stage takes a little longer than 4 hours and leads into the rather lonely region of the Caplone Group in the southern Val di Ledro Alps. We cross the state road 240 and enter the southern side of the valley. Soon we reach a goods road, on which we then continue through the forest. There we meet a hollow path no. 456, along which we soon reach some huts. Soon after, we pass the chapel of San Martino and soon reach another hermitage. We continue along the aforementioned path until we reach the upper Val Scaglia. Then we take path no. 419, we pass a spring and reach Bocca Caset. Turn left on path no. 416 and a short distance later you reach Rif. Garibaldi.
Section 23: Rif. Garibaldi - Rif. Cima Rest
This section takes just under 7 hours. It goes through the central Caplone group. A special feature are the numerous species of flowers that can only be found here. From Rif. Garibaldi we climb up into the meadow basin of Tremalzo. Continue along a passable old war road until you reach Mga. Ciapa. Soon we start descending again until we reach the Passo della Cocca. We continue to descend and soon reach Mga. Ca dall'Era. Later we pass Mga. Spiazzo and then climb up to a saddle. Passing Mga. di Lorina, we finally reach the end of the passable road. We soon enter the northern flank of M. Caplone and a little later the Val di Campo. On an old war path on the southern side of the ridge, we descend to below the Bocca di Campei and soon we reach Mga. Tombea. It now goes up and down a few times before we reach the Bocca di Caplone. We soon reach the houses of Pilaster. Shortly before, we turn left and reach the meadow ridge of Alvezza and soon Mga. Alvezza. Via an asphalt road we reach the Rif. Cima Rest.
Stage 24: Rif. Cima Rest - Capovalle
This stage takes around 5 hours. First we climb up to a saddle. Via a footpath we now descend through the forest towards Val Vestino and back to the road. Soon we reach the area of the village of Magasa. From the centre of the village, we first go uphill and then into the northern side of the Denai hill. Downhill we reach the meadows and houses of Vott. Soon we reach the Val Armarolo and cross the stream of the same name. We pass the meadows of Messane and Premaus and soon reach the mountain village of Persone and a little later the village of Moerna. We continue along the asphalt road and after some ups and downs, we descend to Vico, a hamlet of Capovalle.
Stage 25: Capovalle - Passo Cavallino della Fobbia
On this stage we are on the road for just under two hours. We take the asphalt road to Lago d'Idro and then up to Passo San Rocco. A little later we reach the Val di Riosecco and the sanctuary of the same name. Further west is the Val di Grande, which we cross and soon cross a hollow. Now we reach Passo Cavallino.
Stage 26: Passo Cavallino della Fobbia - Rif. Pirlo
This stage takes around 4 hours. We take path no. 3 and go up until we reach the depression of the Cocca Vici. We continue descending until we reach the meadow saddle of the Cocca di Corpaglione. We soon reach the Vallone high valley via a rather long, strenuous stretch of path and shortly afterwards the Valle della Zocca. Continue on trail no. 3 until you reach a fork. Keep straight on and you will soon reach the Passo della Fobbiola. Continue left along path no. 7, which leads uphill to a small hut. We now head towards the eastern ridge of M. Spino. Soon we reach Rif. Giorgio Pirlo.
Stage 27: Rif. Pirlo - Hotel-Ristorante Colomber
The stage, which lasts just under two hours, begins at Rif. Pirlo, from where we first descend into Passo di Spino. We take cart path no. 8 and reach the western flank of Dos Le Prade and a little later the south-western ridge of M. Pirello. It goes downhill and we soon reach a cluster of houses. We continue down to the Valle di Poiano and then down to the Hotel-Ristorante Colomber.
Stage 28: Hotel-Ristorante Colomber - Gardone Riviera
The final stage of the route only takes about an hour and can also be covered by bus. It is on an asphalt road, but the landscape around it is extremely beautiful: we walk through cypress and olive gardens and soon reach the sparkling blue of Lake Garda. First we cross the village of San Michele and then continue downhill to the village of Tresnico. We pass beautiful houses and descend to Gardone Riviera.
