We start the Gebaweg at the Meiniger Hütte. Alternatively, entry is also possible at the Geba plateau or at the Bergstübchen. On the summit plateau of the Hohe Geba, the Rhönkulturgarten awaits us in addition to the fantastic panorama. Then we walk down to the so-called "village of fountains": Stepfershausen impresses with its 13 public and functional fountains. They all have their own name with a matching fountain saying. From here, small paths wind their way to Oberkatz. The village is picturesquely in the middle of the valley, protected by the surrounding mountains. At the foot of the mountains rises the Katza brook, which gave the village its name. We continue uphill to the Hohe Löhr rest area and walk along the Schäferweg. This themed trail explains everything about sheep farming and grazing. After that, typical Rhön, large-scale grasslands begin and we marvel at the next fabulous view over the Lange Rhön to Kreuzberg. This view is called Rhönfrieden and whoever is there understands exactly why. Those who have made inner peace with themselves and the world run on to the village of Geba. There is an octagonal mountain church here that should not be missed. Those who started from the Geba plateau hike back and are rewarded again with the great view.

Author’s recommendation

The octagonal mountain church, built in 1791, is one of the most extraordinary churches in Germany. A visit is highly recommended, in addition to the church services, concerts are also held here. You should also plan a little time for the Rhön Culture Garden and the Rhön Energy House on the Hohe Geba.

Safety information

  • In the village of Geba and the access road to the Gebaplateau, watch out for road traffic

The tourist routes of the Rhön are mostly used by other active people (hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, riders, cross-country skiers, etc.).

We ask all active nature sports enthusiasts to show consideration for one another. The same applies of course to nature - it is worth protecting. In the Rhön, therefore, nature sports should only be practiced in daylight on designated paths and areas.
