During this trip you can explore two signature peaks of Hármashatár-hegy group. The calcareous grassland at the top of Újlaki-hegy allows for a stunning view over Pesthidegkút and mountains of Dunazug, while Hármashatár-hegy offers a view of Buda Hills and Budapest.

Hármashatár-hegy is a tiny hiking paradise of Budapest. The name refers only to the main peak (495 m) and hill but in fact a group of horst is included in this area. It is covered by a contiguous forest offering places and an atmosphere typical only in much higher mountains with several outcrops, small grasslands and hiking trails. Although it is easy to access by car, options for public transport are limited, which makes this place less crowded than other popular green spots in the capital. There is hikers’ lodge on the peak as well.

The first destination of this short round-trip is the majestic calcareous grassland on the top of Újlaki-hegy boasting a 360 degree view over mountains of Dunazug and peaks of Börzsöny in the distance. After a pleasant hike you will arrive at Virágos-nyereg in a saddle and climb to the peak of Hármashatár-hegy along a rocky path. Besides visiting Guckler Lookout Tower to enjoy the view over Budapest and the surrounding mountains you may also have a meal or stay overnight there. Finally, the trail descends along a rocky path to the starting point.

Author’s recommendation

  • You may stay overnight at Rotter Lajos Hikers’ Lodge on Hármashatár-hegy or have a meal in Hangár Bisztró next to.
  • Bus service is sparse. Find out about it beforehand.

Turn-by-turn directions

Heading towards rocks of Újlaki-hegy

Head right from the bus stop along the paved road. It soon changes into a dirt track uphill. Follow the Yellow (S) markers along the rocky path. You are walking among dolomite rocks and vegetation is getting sparse. Finally, winding among rock outcrops the trail arrives at the barren calcareous grassland of Újlaki-hegy.

The top of the hill offers a view over nearly the whole of Buda Hills: Hárs-hegy and János-hegy just opposite, the grassy and rocky twin peaks of Sas-hegy, to the right of them Pesthidegkút and Remete-szurdok as well as Szénások and Nagy-Kopasz in the background. Right below the viewpoint an airstrip stretches. The trail continues among trees for a few meters and arrives at another clearing with an even wider view. A hang gliding launch pad there is a perfect spot pause on your walk and enjoy the view of Pesthidegkút Basin, Gerecse, Pilis and Börzsöny Mountains beyond Buda Hills. Perhaps, this is the most beautiful point of the trip.

Crossing series of clearings to Virágos-nyereg

Say good-bye to the varied landscape and follow the trail ascending through the woods on the northern slope of Újlaki-hegy. Due to sparse marking and many interwoven unmarked offshoots be careful to follow the Yellow (S) markers. However, the small size of the area makes it easy to find your way, anyway. The trail rounds a spur of Mária-hegy crossing a series of clearings and mostly levels with occasional views over the surrounding hills on the left. The trail arrives at Virágos-nyereg (Saddle of Flowers). The small meadow is a junction of several trails and it may be challenging to find the right one.

On the top of Hármashatár-hegy

The Blue (K) trail crosses the meadow and steeply ascends on the slope of Vihar-hegy. It traverses through a varied forest on a rocky path and on the other side of the peak descends into the saddle. After the next short climb you will cross a clearing in a saddle and arrive at the garden of Rotter Lajos Hikers’ Lodge. The trail passes by refurbished buildings and beautiful pines. Hangár Bisztró on the right offers a good opportunity for refreshment. In a few meters uphill the wooden globe of Guckler Károly Lookout Tower sits on the top of the hill.

The lookout tower was built on the concrete base of a former anti-aircraft battery and was named after Károly Guckler renowned for reforesting hills around Budapest. It offers a great view over the capital as well as Pilis and Visegrád Mountains in the north and Buda Hills in the south.

Back to Szépvölgyi-dűlő

The trail takes you to the rim of the southwestern slope where change to the Blue ↺ (K↺ ) trail, which begins a descent along a wide path. You will enter a scrubland and continue through a dense forest. The path running along a spur of Hármashatár-hegy finally joins into a paved road. Head left and in a few minutes you will arrive at the bus stop.
