Through the Valley of the kings

The castles of the Loire are unparalleled in the world: more than 400 complexes still exist today on the banks of the French river that winds through the regions of Burgundy, Centre-Val de Loire and Loire Valley-Atlantic.

The high density of defensive fortifications stems from the historical importance of the Loire: it was once a border river between the French heartland and the territories occupied by England in the north. Especially during the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453), numerous castles and fortresses were built.

Peace came, the fortresses were no longer needed - and were therefore transformed into enchanting castles from the beginning of the Renaissance. Wealthy nobles settled in the scenic Loire Valley. The French kings from the House of Valois ruled the country not from Paris - but from their castles on the Loire.

Cycling is the best way to discover the Loire Valley and its sights. The unique cycling route "La Loire à Vélo" covers the most beautiful places in the region. You can cycle from castle to castle on lightly trafficked roads, greenways and specially laid out cycle paths.
