Centre-Val de Loire

The Centre-Val de Loire region is located in the heart of France and owes its name to the Loire River. The course of the river is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a decisive influence on the region's natural landscape and is an inviting place for cycling and hiking tours. City tourists are drawn to Tours and Amboise or to the capital, Orléans, where there are winding alleys and squares to explore. The Loire Valley is particularly famous for its magnificent castles.

Le Centre-Val de Loire... En Roue Libre

The castles in France's "Valley of the Kings"

The castles of the Loire are unparalleled in the world: more than 400 complexes still exist today on the banks of the French river, which winds through the regions of Burgundy, Centre-Val de Loire and Pays de la Loire.

The high density of defensive fortifications stems from the Loire's historical importance: it was once a border river between the French heartland and the British-occupied territories to the north. Especially during the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453), numerous castles and fortresses were built.

Peace came, the fortresses were no longer needed - and therefore, since the beginning of the Renaissance, they were transformed into enchanting castles. Wealthy nobles settled in the scenic Loire Valley. The French kings from the House of Valois ruled the country not from Paris, but from their castles on the Loire.

Travelling the Loire Valley by bike

It is probably the most beautiful long-distance cycle route in all of France: the Loire Valley Cycle Route. Over a length of more than 750 km, it leads from Nevers to Saint-Brevin on the Atlantic coast. Along the way, picturesque river landscapes and lovely vineyards are waiting to be explored. The highlight, however, are the many proud castles strung along the Loire like a string of pearls - French history par excellence.

If you need a bit of a change from the stately chateaux, visit the lively towns along the Loire. Whether in Orléans, Blois, Tours, Angers or Nantes - wonderful cultural experiences, excellent cuisine and a well-deserved glass of wine in the old town can be found everywhere.

Even for children and leisure cyclists, the individual stages are manageable without difficulty, as the route along the riverbank is very flat and includes many rest stops. The cycling route along the Loire allows you to discover all the beauty of the last wild European river.
