Damming the north-to-south Csörgető Creek created a series of reservoirs ideal for observing local wildlife or, in other parts, enjoying recreational facilities for swimming or angling. Bustling summers, intact nature from autumn to spring.

In the 18th century there were only two natural ponds here. One at a lower, another at a higher elevation with a mill in between to leverage hydropower.

After a lengthy planning period the owners (Antal Zierer and Sándor Endrődy) got several dams built across the creek in 1931 to create 11 large ponds with trees planted around them. Right from the beginning the ponds were intended to serve various purposes. The one in the middle was meant for recreation with a riverside resort while fish were stocked in the others.

The lake deepens slowly (with a maximum depth of 2.5 meters) and you can walk in from a shady and grassy beach. It is an ideal place with small children who can safely play even 10 meters off the shore. Keep in mind that the creek feeds the ponds at a high rate thus maintaining a 1 to 2 degrees lower water temperature than usual in summers. Boats and paddle boats are available for rent.

4 ponds are used for angling and the rest for fish farming. Potentially, anglers may expect to catch carps, breams, crucian carps, grass carps, pikes or sturgeons.

There are various options for accommodation, such as a camping site or houses to let. This silent and idyllic environment offers a range of programs to visitors, e.g. walking around the lakes, hiking or biking in the area, or the physical and mental challenge of the obstacle course in the adventure park.

During the peak season a wide spectrum of eateries is open ranging from fry bread place through diners to restaurants.

Public transport

Take the Zalaegerszeg to Sárvár bus service and get off at “Szajki Tavak” stop.

Getting there

Head north from the bus stop following the Blue (K) and Green (Z) markers. The Green (Z) markers lead you to the camping site while the Blue (K) Trail runs northward parallel the ponds. The trail does not lead directly to the lakeside. Take the first left (Fürdő Street) after passing the diners (600 meters from the bus stop) to get there.

Parking

In Hosszúpereszteg turn south onto Árpád Street from Road 8. It continues as Hunyadi Street towards Mikosszéplak and exits the village. In three kilometers head right at the junction towards Szajki Lakes. Parking is free.
