Visitor Centre, Sas-hegy (Budapest)
The visitor centre of the Sas-hegy Nature Reserve is a perfect destination for families with kids. While adults may enjoy the exhibition kids may learn about nature playfully. The interactive exhibition called “Shelter in the concrete jungle” presents the history of the hill and its natural values.
You can learn about local reptiles, such as the European green lizard or the common wall lizard as well as the copper skink identified first by botanist Pál Kitaibel in 1797. One of the signature species of the hill is the highly protected large whipsnake, which may grow as long as 2 metres (harmless). You can observe the copper skink and the green lizard in their natural habitat in the open-air terrarium at the visitor centre.
Take your time to check the terrace upstairs and enjoy the view. Various programmes are available for visitors as well as thematic tours and presentations are offered to groups registered in advance.
Besides the visitor centre, the flat top of the hill also hosts a lookout terrace (with the same opening hours). Both attractions are wheelchair accessible. The terrace offers an extraordinary view over Budapest and signs help to spot and identify signature buildings of the city.
A nearly 1 km nature trail starts from the visitor centre. It is accessible only with guidance. Guides are there not only to assure safety on the narrow path along the edge of the cliffs and protect endangered species but also to enhance visitors’ experience with detailed explanations or stories. Even locals may get surprised at some discoveries in their neighbourhood.
