Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Memorial Park and Stupa, Tar
Philologist and orientalist Sándor Csoma Kőrösi (1784-1842) encountered Tibetan language and culture while searching for the ancient home of Hungarians in Asia. He devoted most of his career to study and present Tibetan culture and is considered the founder of Tibetology. His work is greatly appreciated by Buddhists and in 1992 Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Peace Stupa was built near Tar by the Hungarian Karma Kagyüpa Buddhist Community to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his death. The same year it was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama himself.
The bright white building with its golden dome may be an unusual sight in Cserhát, despite two of the seven stupas in Hungary were built in Nógrád County (the other is the Enlightenment Stupa in Becske). The stupa is a traditional Buddhist building with a layout determined by Buddha himself 2500 years ago. They are usually built to counterbalance inner and outer destructive powers of the world. The steps symbolize spiritual development as a gradual progress towards enlightenment. It contains sacred relics, symbols and writings. As a sign of respect visitors are expected to follow the ancient tradition of clockwise circumambulation (going around) as well as make offers, such as donation or burning incenses.
Right next to the stupa Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Memorial Hall was built in Tibetan sacral architectural style, which displays a thematic exhibition on his adventurous life. The park opened in 1995.
In 2011 the community built a 3-storey Tara Temple (Mother of Liberation Temple) in traditional Tibetan/Mongol style named after the female Buddha, the symbol of universal female power and perfected wisdom. Programs and meditations in the mornings and evenings are open to the public. It is closed during daytime.
Although the park nicknamed as Little Tibet is located near the busy Road 21 it is said to be an island of peace. Besides sacred buildings a teahouse and a shop also await visitors. The park and the porch of the teahouse offers a beautiful view over Cserhát and Mátra.
