Castle of Csókakő
The castle was built after the Mongol Invasion to guard a route of strategic importance to Székesfehérvár.
Interestingly, it was named after the nickname of the supposed constructor and not the bird (csóka=jackdaw), who was probably a member of Csák clan. Later the castle passed into the hands of the Rozgonyis, Corvin János (King Matthias’ son) and Tamás Bakócz.
The upper ward is the oldest part of the castle and it was extended later when the lower ward was built in the 15th century including the barbican. Although archeologists have not found traces of it Turkish explorer Evliya Çelebi mentions a mosque here in his travelogue, and in addition, a drawing from the 16th century also displays it.
From mid-16th century the castle was in the hands of Turkish troops for nearly 150 years. Although it was recaptured by Hungarians a few times but only for weeks or months. Following the end of Turkish rule in Hungary the castle lost its military importance and started to decay. It was only in 1995 when the Society of Csókakő Castle was founded to save it from further deterioration and major works started only in recent years.
Its gate, drawbridge, southwestern wall and wooden wall walk were finished by 2014. Further archeological excavations are underway with findings mostly from the period of Turkish rule and sparsely from the Árpád era. The splendid view over Bakony and Móri Basin is also well-worth the climb.
