Until 1543, it belonged to the von Ketteler family, before being transferred to the von Westrems. In 1618, it was purchased by the prince-bishop of Paderborn, Dietrich von Fürstenberg, who bequeathed it to his nephews. Since then, the estate has belonged to Baron von Fürstenberg.
The three-winged forecastle was built between 1683 and 1723. From 1844 to 1853, the actual hunting lodge was built according to plans by Ernst Friedrich Zwirner. Zwirner was also a master builder, and completed Cologne Cathedral. The palace chapel is therefore not dissimilar to this important building. Today, the palace and its park are considered to be one of the most important neo-Gothic palaces in Westphalia.
Certainly, one of the highlights of its almost 700-year-old history was the visit by the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV, who stayed at the palace in 1853. Today, one of the rooms still bears the name “Königssaal”, or “King’s hall”.
The hunting lodge was used as a film location and backdrop for various Edgar Wallace films.
In the Herdringen hunting lodge, you can get married with a civil or church ceremony, or with a free wedding ceremony. One particular highlight is the option of getting married in the palace park. Feel the effect of the pictures of this unique place.
The palace is not open to the general public, as it is private property.
