Pyrenees

The 430 km long mountain range stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, separating the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of Europe. The folded Mountain Range forms the border between France and Spain and also includes the small state of Andorra in the middle of the mountains. The mountain range is divided into the western or Atlantic Pyrenees, which consist mainly of limestone, the high or central Pyrenees and the eastern Pyrenees. The highest mountain is the Pico de Aneto with a height of 3,404 m.

Discover the region

The Pyrenees were already inhabited by Neanderthals before modern man settled there. Pastoral farming is predominant in the mountains, in the west it is also linked to cheese production. In the foothills, both France and Spain have vineyards. In the Pyrenees, three national parks have been established: the Ordesa y Monte Perdido and the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici on the Spanish side and the Parc National de Pyrénées on the French side. The main transport links wind their way along the edge of the still low mountains to the east and west. Pilgrims cross the Pyrenees on the Camino Francés on their way from France to Santiago de Compostela.
